If you are teaching remotely this school year, HyperDocs can be a great way to engage and differentiate instruction for students. It can be particularly useful for distance learning. Since it is created using Google Docs or Slides, students without internet access can download the contents when attainable and continue to work off-line if necessary. Even more, HyperDocs are interactive digital lesson plans that allow students to work in and out of multimedia sources. Hyperlinks are embedded into the document linking teacher videos, Youtube videos, worksheets, quizzes, educational games and even collaborative activities. The possibilities of added resources are endless. It is amazing to discover all the great things that teachers have created with their own HyperDocs. This summer several teachers were fortunate to attend the webinar Using HyperDocs for Online Learning (Intermediate), which allowed participants to collaborate as well as explore different options for creating the digital resource. The facilitators Karma Nordstrom and Ellen Brooks, both educators from Michigan State, provided good tips for using Google add-ons such as Jamboard for student collaboration and forms for quizzes with real time feedback. The HyperDocs website provides several free templates you can edit and make your own. If you’d like to learn more about how to include HyperDocs into your online instruction visit the link HERE to be directed to their website.
Similar to HyperDocs, digital choice boards are yet another engaging interactive tool. Choice boards can be created in Google Docs or Google Slides also. They enable students to work in and out of multimedia sets while giving students a choice in picking their learning task. Teachers can also embed links to teacher videos, Youtube videos, worksheets, and quizzes. If you have admiration for the Daily Five, perhaps choice boards can serve the purpose of student choice for learning centers. Curricula 4U digital resource provides opportunities for students to practice the five critical areas of reading such as phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. This editable resource allows teachers to insert learning content flawlessly while students practice the five key areas of reading daily. You can click HERE to check out Curricula 4U Reading Choice Board. In addition, you can click HERE to see Numbers and Operations math choice board. It’s ideal for practice with rounding numbers to the ten’s and hundred’s place, three digit addition and subtraction, data/ graphing, and an introduction to multiplication as well as division.
As schools resume this fall, for several districts, a blended or completely virtual learning opportunity will occur. HyperDocs and Choice Boards can serve as purposeful tools that are the links for distance learning and easy implementation of online instruction.
